Everyday tips
Short tips, with sources, for everyday life with a GLP-1 medicine.
Barbecue without the rush
At a churrasco, an asado or a cookout: start with the meat, take a smaller plate, eat slowly and stop at the first sign of feeling full. Large, greasy meals tend to make nausea, vomiting and diarrhea worse.

Strength training two or three times a week
Guidelines recommend strength training two to three times a week or more while you lose weight with these medicines, plus at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity. The workouts here take 20 to 30 minutes, and there's a 15-minute version for low-energy days.

Water when you train or it's hot
You lose more fluid when you train, play sports in the sun, use a sauna or wake up hungover. Keep water nearby and drink during breaks. If you're vomiting, have diarrhea or feel dizzy, fluids come first today, not the workout. The signs to look out for are in Help.

Blood pressure medicine and dizziness
In the US labels of these medicines, low blood pressure was more common in people also taking blood pressure medicine. If you feel dizzy when you stand up or during a workout, stop, sit down and tell your doctor. Changes to any of your medicines are your doctor's call.

Protein first on the plate
Start each meal with the protein: meat, fish, eggs, beans, yogurt or cheese. When your appetite is small, this keeps the protein from being the part you leave behind. The guidance for people on these medicines is protein at every meal.

Small meals at regular times
The guidance is small meals at regular times, avoiding both large meals and long stretches without eating that leave you very hungry. Vomiting is more likely after large meals.

Kidney disease and protein
If you have chronic kidney disease, talk to your doctor before eating more protein. Kidney guidelines advise less protein for moderate to advanced disease than the ranges usually cited for weight loss. Your target is a decision for you and your doctor or dietitian.

If you're going to drink
Alcohol can make nausea and reflux worse, and the guidance for people on these medicines is to keep it to a minimum. If you drink, one way to keep it small: alternate with water and pick a smaller glass. If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, drinking a lot without eating can bring on low blood sugar.
